- Record vs Denver: 36-48-1
Michigan travels to Denver this weekend for their first true test of the season. Both teams are undefeated and have recent series sweeps against Alaska Anchorage. Last weekend Denver’s only game was an exhibition against the USNTDP, in which they won 7-1. Statistically, these two teams are pretty evenly matched with a limited sample size. There’s no shortage of high-level talent in this matchup as each roster features 16 drafted players.
The last time these teams met was in the Frozen Four last year when the Pioneers held on long enough to win in overtime, en route to their third championship in 5 years. Michigan deserved a better fate in that game, and there’s no doubt they’ll be looking for revenge this weekend. On Friday, Denver will be raising a championship banner, adding more fuel to the fire for the maize and blue.
What’s unfortunate about this weekend’s matchup is that it isn’t nationally televised. This is a premier matchup in the college hockey season, and unless you live in Denver or want to pay $17/day to stream the games, you probably won’t watch it. College hockey needs a dedicated place to watch all games instead of each conference having its own streaming platform. This continues to be one of my biggest gripes with how the NCAA handles hockey broadcasting.
Players to Watch
Perron and Hage have been red hot to start the season and will need to continue their strong play against Denver. DuPont has been good too, but this is his chance to really prove himself. I want him to be a factor and take control of the game at times. If he can do that against this level of competition, then the hype around him will truly be validated.
